Mayflower Madame was formed in Oslo during the winter of 2010-11. They started rehearsing in a desolate industrial building where they had to share the space with a carwash company. Amidst the gritty surroundings, they instantly found their dark, post-punkish sound and soon recorded a four-track demo. Just months later, in August 2011, they won the award Unsigned Band of the Week on one of Norway’s biggest radio channels. The band then received continuous airplay on national radio and spent the following year playing a bunch of shows as well as planning their first official release. In 2013, Mayflower Madame went on to be selected to play a showcase for the best up-and-coming bands in Norway at Norwegian Wood Festival 2013 (headlined by Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds and My Bloody Valentine). Their record debut came in August the same year with the EP Into the Haze, which despite modest promotion created a buzz on a wide selection of esoteric music blogs. In the wake of the release, Mayflower Madame was the opening act for the American neo-psych band Crystal Stilts. Their music video debut (with the EP’s title track “Into the Haze”) then followed in March 2014. Directed by Kenneth Karlstad (who recently had been featured at Berlin International Film Festival and SXSW) and inspired by Expressionist horror films, the video further contributed to the band’s rising reputation.
In early 2015, Mayflower Madame released the single “Lovesick” and was picked up by the American label Custom Made Music. At the same time, they made their airplay debut on US radio channels while also receiving praise from the music press. L.A. Record hailed “Lovesick” as “powerfully lysergic reverb rock” and The Work Magazine wrote, “New on our personal playlist to life is Mayflower Madame. With its loyal homage to the legends of the 60’s and a heaping spoonful of UK drone-rock, “Lovesick” has enough dopamine to sedate the largest pink elephant in the room.” The band spent the rest of the year recording tracks for their first full-length album and doing their biggest shows so far (including playing with internationally acclaimed bands such as Disappears (US), Moon Duo (US) and La Femme (France) as well as touring outside of Scandinavia for the first time).
Mayflower Madame’s first full-length album Observed in a Dream was released in April 2016 in Europa (via the band’s own label Night Cult Records) and in June 2016 in North America (via Custom Made Music). The album caught the attention of major international music publications like Q Magazine, Drowned in Sound, Clash Magazine, Classic Rock Magazine, Louder Than War and Ghettoblaster Magazine, and it thoroughly received excellent reviews both in their home country Norway and abroad. The album (in particular the singles “Lovesick” and “Weightless”) also generated extensive airplay in the US – including several Top 20 and Top 5 rotations on college radio stations.
